Miami Beach’s premier international contemporary and modern art fair has called Miami Beach since 2001, featuring more than 250 galleries from 31 countries within the Miami Beach Convention Center.
Over the years, Miami’s local galleries have entered the revered exhibition space, including Fredric Snitzer Gallery and Spinello Projects, further solidifying Miami as the world’s cultural capital. Widely regarded as the most important and exciting time of the year in Miami, Art Basel Miami Beach brings some electricity to the air in early December. It attracts a sophisticated international crowd of galleries, artists, collectors and glitterati to the sands of South Beach and beyond.
Fairs and events by satellite
While Art Basel Miami Beach is undoubtedly the main event, it has generated more than 20 satellite fairs, ranging from Midtown to Downtown. In 2004, Design Miami launched, a sister fair to Art Basel, exploring the global world of design, culture and commerce. The museums and galleries of Miami present their most attractive work during Art Basel.
“It’s the place par excellence to show,” says Robert Fontaine, director of the Robert Fontaine Gallery in Wynwood. “It’s a focus on the newness of the new. These artists are producing the best works of their career to show at the world art fair.”
Where art is found, a fashionable crowd is never too far away. Designers and magazine publishers launch events and parties, from luxury boutiques in the Design District to the terraces of chic boutiques in South Beach.
